Collar or harness: where to attach a pet ID tag

A collar and harness serve different purposes. Learn where the tag belongs and what to inspect before every walk.

An identification tag should remain visible and attached even when the leash moves from collar to harness. Its attachment point affects comfort, noise, and how quickly a finder can read the engraving.

Why the collar is the primary location

Attach the tag to the collar's dedicated ring rather than the leash ring. It then stays with the animal when the harness comes off. The collar must fit correctly and suit the animal's size.

• Use a strong, fully closed ring.
• Avoid crowding one ring with accessories.
• Keep the engraving facing outward.

When the harness can carry identification

For a trip where the harness stays on, a second temporary identifier may help. It should not replace the collar tag. Choose a point that does not rub the skin or move close to the armpit.

• Check movement while walking.
• Remove unnecessary accessories after travel.

The one-minute pre-walk check

Pull the ring gently, read the text, and observe the tag while the animal walks. Adjust it if it reaches the mouth, catches, or hits the buckle heavily.
