Laser engraving: what it is, how it works, and why it beats manual engraving
Laser engraving produces fine, permanent, perfectly repeatable marks. Here's how the technology works and why it matters for your pet's medallion.
When people hear "laser engraved," many picture a complicated industrial machine. In reality, laser engraving has become the standard for quality personalised accessories — and for very good reason.
How laser engraving works
A high-precision laser beam burns or vaporises the surface layer of the material, leaving a permanent mark. Unlike mechanical engraving (with a rotary bit or needle), a laser:
- Never touches the material physically — no risk of deformation or cracking
- Can reproduce any font, symbol, or vector design with perfect accuracy
- Produces lines of the same fineness whether it's the first piece or the hundredth
- Is extremely fast — a standard tag takes 1–3 minutes to engrave
Why it matters for pet tags
On a small medallion (25–40 mm), every millimetre counts. Laser engraving allows for:
- Fine fonts — even small characters stay legible
- Precise decorative symbols — paw prints, hearts, zodiac signs
- Exact reproduction — if you reorder later, the replacement will be identical
- Durability — the mark does not fade, rub off, or corrode
Laser vs. mechanical engraving
Mechanical engraving (rotary or needle) is cheaper in terms of equipment, but has clear limitations:
- Thicker lines and less precise fonts
- Risk of burrs or rough edges on the material
- Cannot reproduce fine images or intricate details at small sizes
