Moving home with a dog or cat: a practical safety plan

Moving day is busy and completely changes an animal's routine. A secure room, controlled transport, and current contact details reduce the chance of a dog or cat slipping away unnoticed.

Prepare before moving day

Inspect the carrier, collar, leash, and tag. Replace an outdated engraved phone number before the move. Keep food, water, medication, and familiar objects accessible.

During transport

Keep the cat inside a secured carrier and restrain the dog appropriately. Never open a carrier in a shared area, and attach the leash before opening a car door.

• Label the carrier.

The first days

Start with one safe area and expand access gradually. Check windows, balconies, and gates. Walk the dog on short leashed routes and give the cat reliable hiding places.
