From safe transport and water to current contact details: a practical checklist for calmer trips with a dog or cat.

A weekend away, a trip to the countryside, or a family visit changes an animal's routine. Unfamiliar places, stops, and open doors increase the chance of a frightened pet getting away. Preparing in advance makes the journey safer.

Before leaving

• inspect the collar, leash, harness, and carrier;
• save a clear, recent photo on your phone;
• confirm that your contact number is current;
• pack water, food, bags, and any necessary medication.

Visible identification

A tag with a name and optional phone number allows a finder to contact you without a microchip reader. Make sure the engraving is legible and the attachment ring is properly closed. If you prefer no phone on the tag, keep contact details on the carrier or in the pet's travel bag.

Safety in the car

Do not let an animal roam freely inside the car. A cat needs a secured carrier; a dog needs a suitable carrier or restraint. Stop in quiet places and attach the leash before opening a door.

At the destination

Introduce the new space gradually and check gates, windows, and balconies. Bring a familiar blanket or bowl. During the first day, keep the dog on a leash even when recall is usually reliable.

A short emergency list

Save a veterinary clinic near the destination, the host's phone number, and your return route. If the animal goes missing, search the immediate area first and publish a clear photo with the exact place and time.
